While Miami may be known for Cuban cafecito, there’s a coffee scene away from the classic ventanitas that fuels locals day in and day out. Cafe Curuba is a big part of that and Debbie Rabinovici is the brains behind the beans. Since opening three years ago, this Coral Gables hideaway has cultivated a loyal following. We chatted with her to learn more about how she continues to brew success.
Why did you decide to start your business? Tell us your backstory!
I came across specialty coffee in NYC and became enthralled by it. Not just the amazing complexity and deliciousness of the coffee itself, but also the cafe environment and how central a good coffee house is to a neighborhood. After a few years of living in New York, I was ready to move back to Miami (where I grew up) and bring to this city a truly good neighborhood cafe.
Why do you love doing business here in Miami?
Asides from loving all the South American influence in Miami, I love that it’s growing and maturing and an amazing rate. There’s always something new to experience and gain inspiration. From the new Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science to the delicious new restaurants popping up all over town. It’s very exciting!
What’s the most helpful piece of customer feedback you’ve received?
To place a honey bear in the guest’s condiment area… Duh.
What’s your advice for other business owners or someone who wants to start a small business?
To be present. In Spanish we have a saying, “el que tiene tienda que la atienda.” Which translates to something like “if you have a store, be there.”
